Boruto's Best Theory Explains Why Eida's Powers Don't Work On Everyone (2024)

Summary

  • Eida's enchantment powers don't work on Sarada and Sumire, sparking a fan theory about why this is the case.
  • The fan theory suggests that Eida's suppressed desire for true friends is the reason behind Sarada and Sumire's immunity to her charm powers.
  • Eida's immaturity and lack of control over her abilities are pointed out as factors that contribute to the theory's plausibility.

Ever since her arrival in Konoha Village, one of the biggest mysteries in Boruto has been why Eida's enchantment powers do not work on Sarada and Sumire, even though they are neither related to her nor members of the Otsutsuki Clan. A fan theory, however, provides one of the more interesting explanations for this, potentially impacting the future trajectories of all three characters significantly.

To grasp the fan theory from TikToker @fw.quan1x, which was shared on Reddit's Boruto: Two Blue Vortex page by @Any_Cranberry_4599, one must first comprehend Eida's powers. Eida's powers arise from the Otsutsuki shinjutsu known as Omnipotence. As described by Momoshiki in Boruto: Naruto Next Generations #79, Omnipotence was akin to a "programming language" a user could use to make their desires real. Members of the Otsutsuki Clan allegedly used the power to create worlds out of nothing.

In Eida, Omnipotence manifested itself in two primary ways. First, it transformed her desire to be loved into an affirmative ability to make almost everyone she meets fall in love with her. Second, it allowed her desire to make Kawaki's desire come true, thus making him switch places with Boruto at the end of part 1. As Momoshiki went on to say, the Otsutsuki did not wield Omnipotence lightly, indicating that once it was activated, it was unlikely that anyone within its target group would be able to evade its effects.

Eida Can't Handle The Power Of Omnipotence

According to this theory, the reason why Sarada and Sumire are immune to Eida's charm is not a "bug" in her abilities, but rather a feature. More specifically, outside of her desire to be loved and to be with Kawaki, she had a third, deeper desire, namely to find real friends who were immune to her charm powers. The first two desires were active in her mind, indicating that she recognized their manifestation as a consequence of her abilities. Conversely, the desire to have true friends remained suppressed or dormant within her mind, preventing her from realizing that her abilities might bring about this outcome without her conscious awareness.

Although some fans may dismiss the theory, it's a plausible argument when considering how Eida came into possession of Omnipotence. Given that Omnipotence was a rare high-level ability, it's reasonable to presume the Otsutsuki who wielded it were mature and seasoned individuals who possessed a deep understanding of themselves and their formidable abilities. It's unlikely that they'd allow Omnipotence to reach their latent desires, nor allow their emotions to control it. Eida, on the other hand, is a teenager. She lacks the maturity to fully know herself and the experience to fully control Omnipotence.

The Power Of Friendship Could Be Stronger Than Omnipotence

The theory argues that if you give a friendless teenager the power to unconsciously make her wishes come true, she will create a loophole in her same power of charms that allows both Sumire and Sarada to be immune. This would also explain why the manga devoted time to showing Eida's attempts to befriend Sumire and Sarada. Moreover, since Momoshiki made clear that once Omnipotence is used, its results cannot be reversed, Sarada and Sumire will never succumb to Eida's charms. This may be an important fact later on in the story, especially considering that it's unlikely Sarada and Sumire will be able to keep their secret from Eida forever.

Of course, there is still a lot that needs to be explained. Sumire and Sarada were already immune the first time they saw Eida, before she could express the wish to become their friend. Also, they're not just immune to the charm, but also to the Boruto-Kawaki swap. Regardless, the blossoming relationship between Sarada, Sumire, and Eida remains an important element in Boruto: Two Blue Vortex, one that could perhaps cause the collapse of Kawaki's plans.
