so... im building a fighter/assassin for a game, his main focus is archery.

what would be a good race for a dex based fighter?

i was thinking Feral tiefling,

the +2 to dex is really good.

Darkvision and fire resistence is great to, hellish rebuke and darkness can help alot in combat

im gonna go with the arcane archer from unearthed Arcana, to use the int bonus

whats your opinion on a feral tiefling fighter?

Feral Tiefling is a great choice. You should also consider High Elf. The ability scores are the same, but you can take the Elven Accuracy feat from Xanathar's Guide to Everything to roll 3 dice instead of 2 whenever you have advantage. At level 11 you can deal a lot of damage by using Shadow Arrow on your first attack, and if the enemy fails their saving throw you use Action Surge andthe Sharpshooter feat. You also get a wizard cantrip, is nice.

If your DM allows it, you could also consider Aarakocra, since if the ceiling is high enough you could fly out of melee range and shoot from there.

There's also Human. Hard to go wrong with that one.

When thinking Dex-based archer, my first thought is always going to be an Elf. High Elf, in this case - +2 dex, +1 int, most mind control spells are Charms, so you get an easy time resisting those, and there are several cantrips that would be a big help, depending on what way you take your PC.Minor illusion is a favorite of mine, especially if you're going to be adding in Assassin, increasing your sneaking and scouting options. As well, you can take the Elven Accuracy feat, which is handy if you plan on relying on Advantage with Assassinate.

Anyways, while feral tieflings are good, I can't help but think thatthere's some concerns. Darkness isn't that great of a spell without someway for you to personally see through it - otherwise, you just get in the way of yourself or your teammates. Hellish Rebuke as a spell is a bit iffy - 3d10 damage is okay, but dex save for half with CHA when you're already pumping DEX and INT for arcane archery save DC and for your assassin's poison kit is a bit too much. Swapping out Infernal Legacy for Winged is a very good option if your GM allows it, especially for an archer, but that is generally considered to be very cheesy and frowned upon by many GMs, so ask first.
